What is nodate? Matcha prepared outdoors

Nodate (野点) is the Japanese word for tea prepared outdoors. A nodate set is a compact version of the usual matcha tools — a smaller whisk, a short scoop and a bowl — packed to travel, and a nodate chasen is the whisk sized for it.

What is nodate?

Nodate is matcha prepared and drunk outdoors, from a garden gathering to a picnic or a walk. The preparation is the same as indoors — matcha whisked with hot water in a bowl — but the tools are chosen to travel: smaller, lighter and packed in cases.

What does a nodate set hold?

A nodate set holds the matcha tools in a compact form: a small whisk in a protective tube, a short scoop, a bowl and the tea. Hot water travels in a flask, at 70–80 °C for matcha.

Frequently asked questions

What does nodate mean?

Nodate (野点) is Japanese for tea made in the open: no means field, and date comes from the verb used for preparing tea.

How is a nodate chasen different from a regular chasen?

It is smaller. Our nodate chasen is about 70 mm tall with a base of about 15 mm, against about 115 mm and 30 mm for a standard whisk, so it fits a travel set.

Can a nodate chasen be used every day?

Yes. It whisks matcha the same way as a full-size chasen; it is simply smaller, and it travels in its own tube.

Who buys nodate tools?

Makers of travel and picnic tea sets, compact gift boxes and subscription boxes, and shops whose customers take matcha to the office.

Does the nodate chasen come in a case?

Yes. It comes in its own clear plastic tube, which keeps the prongs in shape in a bag.
