What is a chashaku made of?
A chashaku is carved from a single strip of bamboo, bent at the tip so it lifts the powder. It comes in white bamboo, pale and natural, or purple bamboo, also called shichiku, a dark bamboo whose colour runs from deep brown to almost black.
| Model | Length | Bamboo | Code |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic chashaku | ≈ 180 mm | White | GTG201002 |
| Short chashaku | ≈ 130 mm | White | GTG201017 |
| Short chashaku | ≈ 130 mm | Purple (shichiku) | GTG201018 |
The short chashaku suits small gift boxes and travel sets; the classic length is the one most matcha sets carry.
How do you use a chashaku?
A chashaku lifts matcha from the tin and drops it into the bowl or the sifter. Scooping the same number of times for every bowl gives the same strength, which is the whole point of the tool. A scoop's weight depends on how full it is, so a business that needs an exact dose weighs it: about 2 g for a bowl of matcha, 2–3 g for a matcha latte.
Chashaku or measuring spoon?
A chashaku is the traditional matcha measure and the scoop in every matcha set; a measuring spoon gives exact grams. The two do different jobs, which is why our tool kit (GTG201020) holds both: a chashaku and a bamboo spoon, with a whisk and a sifter.
