100-prong chasen — purple bamboo matcha whisk

A 100-prong matcha whisk (chasen) cut from a single piece of purple bamboo, also called shichiku — a dark bamboo whose colour runs from deep brown to almost black. Hyappondate (百本立), printed on its tube, is the cut most matcha drinkers use every day: fine enough for a smooth foam, sturdy enough to last.

The dark bamboo is the difference. It gives the whisk a look of its own on a shelf or in a gift set, and it whisks as the white version does. The white-bamboo 100-prong chasen, with published wholesale prices, is GTG201001.
